That often makes sense in context, even when the activation outlasts what triggered it. Here's a stranger one: your fear may not be constant. With each heartbeat, sensors in your arteries signal your brain, and studies have found people perceive frightening things as more intense during that beat than between beats. Some researchers think a pounding heart doesn't just follow fear — it may amplify it, which is part of why slowing your breath (and your heart) helps.
