Attention is a piece of your life
Attention is often discussed like a productivity resource: spend it well, protect your focus, get more done. But attention is also the material of an inner life. What you repeatedly notice becomes part of the world you feel yourself living in.

Read the steps once, put the screen down, and use one quiet timer.
The quiet exchange
A feed offers an endless exchange: give it a sliver of attention and it will give you novelty, outrage, beauty, gossip, instruction, and another reason not to leave. No single trade feels consequential. The mortgage is made of tiny payments.
The cost is not that every minute online is bad. It is that an environment designed to keep presenting the next thing can leave little room for your own unfinished thoughts to develop a shape.
Attention can be returned
You do not need perfect focus or a purified relationship with technology. A useful beginning is simply to notice when your attention has stopped feeling chosen.
Returning can be small: looking at distance, finishing one paragraph before checking, walking without carrying input, or letting a question remain unanswered until tomorrow.
A two-minute attention inventory
- Name the last three things that held your attention.
- Notice which one you chose and which one arrived by default.
- Choose one ordinary thing to notice next for a full minute.
Related notes
- Constant input erases the edges
Without pauses, one person’s urgency, another person’s opinion, and your own unfinished thought can begin to feel like the same continuous weather.
- Put friction before the feed
A small obstacle can turn an automatic opening into a visible choice without demanding perfect discipline.
