Aftercare

Aftercare is the quiet period after a practice or a hard moment. The system needs a minute to land. For most people, what happens in that minute shapes whether the shift integrates or evaporates.

Plain-language definition

Aftercare describes the deliberate downshift after activation, intensity, or a regulating practice. Nervous-system states are complex and individual. This is orientation, not diagnosis.

  • wanting to keep moving rather than stop
  • a slow settling if you let it have time

  • 'okay, that's done — back to the inbox'
  • urge to grade whether the practice 'worked' right away
Why the body might do this

Adrenaline and cortisol take minutes to clear, not seconds, so the body keeps shifting after the practice ends. Jumping straight into intensity uses up that shift before it consolidates. A few unhurried minutes after — water, quiet, a slow walk — give the change somewhere to land.
